The model has energized our focus on composition course outcomes and on meeting the needs of students. We don't want to just accelerate; we focus on providing a strong foundation of reading and writing skills that enable students to be successful. This session will include information on Ivy Tech's creation and evolution of its IRW co-requisite course.

    Contextualized Learning

How often have you heard an instructor say, "How did these students not learn to read in previous classes?!"  Application of skills from one course to another, especially another discipline, can be very difficult.  Contextualization provides students the opportunity to implement reading skills in relevant, meaningful projects and/or activities that can be applied to subsequent coursework in other disciplines and in students' personal lives.  This webinar will provide some ideas for contextualized project/problem-based learning that provides students the chance to make decisions about what they read, how to approach reading a variety of text for a variety of purposes, and how to apply new knowledge to real world problems.

Presenter:  Dr. Mary Zimmerer, Reading Faculty; Chair, Composition, Creative Writing, and Literature Division; Chandler-Gilbert Community College

From Retention to Completion: A Conversation with Dr. Vincent Tinto

“To promote greater degree completion, institutions have to ask not only how they should act to retain their students but also how they should act so that more of their students want to persist to completion” To understand how to do so colleges and universities have to adopt the student perspective and see their experiences through their eyes.”

Join NADE for a conversation with Dr. Vincent Tinto.  The previous questions will be addressed as well as several submitted from NADE members.  Time permitting, Dr. Tinto will answer your additional questions, regarding student success and completion.

Developmental Education: Professionalism, Politics, and Practice

Dr. D. Patrick Saxon will be speaking about political advocacy in developmental education. These are times of change, reform, redesign, and in some cases, a push for the elimination of developmental education. Professionals need to be prepared to discuss, advocate for, and defend what works and debunk that which is harmful in our practice - in the spirit of upholding academic standards and supporting student success. This presentation will cover effective means and messages for voicing our vision of the field. Suggestions for what to say, how to say it, and to whom to speak will be discussed.

    D. Patrick Saxon, Professor and Director, Developmental Education Administration Ed.D. Program, Sam Houston State University

Dr. D. Patrick Saxon is a Professor and Director of the Developmental Education Administration Doctoral Program at Sam Houston State University. He has published extensively and is coauthor of Attaining Excellence in Developmental Education.
